Quick answer

Axelwin is an ecommerce agency and Shopify Partner headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, working with international DTC brands that are entering or scaling in the German market. The work covers both the commercial side, market entry strategy, localisation and growth, and the platform side, Shopify builds and migrations for the German market. Most clients are North American or international brands with no German office, so engagements run remotely and in English while the German side, including VAT and OSS registration, packaging and product compliance, payment providers and local partners, is handled here. Our office is at Neuer Wall 18 in central Hamburg.

Why the agency being in Germany changes the work

A German market launch is mostly made of things that have to happen in Germany. VAT and OSS registration, LUCID packaging registration, a Responsible Person under GPSR, a fulfilment partner, a payment provider contract, and the consumer law that shapes the checkout. Each one has a counterparty who works in German and on German timelines.

An agency outside the market can plan that. It is a different thing to sit inside it, with the registrations, the providers and the authorities as ordinary working tasks rather than research. That is the practical difference a Hamburg address makes, and it is why the location is on this page rather than in a footer.

Hamburg itself is a commercial city rather than a startup one. It is Germany's largest port, the base of much of the country's media and consumer goods trade, and a market where brand and retail decisions are made rather than reported on. Working here means the read on German buyers comes from the market, not from a report about it.

What working with a Hamburg team looks like from abroad

Most clients have never had a German office and are not planning to open one. The engagement is built for that.

Language

Your side runs in English

Briefs, calls, documentation and reporting are in English. The German language work sits inside the store and in dealings with authorities and providers, written and handled here.

Presence

A German entity, not a mailbox

Axelwin GmbH is a German company operating from an office on Neuer Wall in central Hamburg. Contracts, registrations and provider relationships sit with a real German entity, not a representative address.

Counsel

Legal inside the engagement

Counsel admitted in Germany and in New York is in-house on every engagement, so the compliance questions a German launch raises are answered inside the project.

Shopify work, run from Hamburg

Axelwin is a Shopify Partner, so the platform side is handled by the same team that owns the German market decisions rather than passed to a separate build shop.

From here that means Shopify Markets and domain structure for a German storefront, the German payment mix with PayPal, invoice and SEPA configured in the order German shoppers expect, checkout and product page localisation written for German buyers rather than translated, and the legal build, the order button wording and the withdrawal flow, specified with counsel in-house.

Migrations are the other half of it. Most brands arrive with a store that performs at home and needs a German layer rather than a rebuild, and where a platform move is genuinely the right call the ranking and redirect work is planned before anything moves. The full detail of how that build runs is on the Shopify agency Germany page.

VAT and OSS, packaging registration, product safety, consumer law and GDPR, handled in-house. See GDPR and ecommerce legal audits.

Peak season

Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Christmas period run as one German trading quarter, including the EU price reduction rules.

Hamburg is not Berlin, and German buyers are not one audience

Treating Germany as a single market is the most common mistake an incoming brand makes. Purchasing behaviour, price sensitivity and brand expectations differ enough between German cities to change a launch plan.

Axelwin runs field research on this directly. The Hamburg buyer intelligence study covers how buyers in a given product category evaluate and purchase in this city, and the Berlin and Hamburg fashion buyer profiles set out why the two cities need different merchandising and messaging.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is Axelwin based?

Our office is at Neuer Wall 18 in central Hamburg. Axelwin GmbH is a German company with Nazim Ekerbicer as Managing Director. The business was originally founded in Berlin and moved its base to Hamburg.

Are you a Shopify agency as well, or only ecommerce consulting?

Both, and they are the same engagement. Axelwin is a Shopify Partner and builds and migrates Shopify stores for the German market, alongside the strategy, localisation, compliance and growth work. The platform is not handed to a separate build shop, which is what usually causes a German launch to arrive technically finished and commercially wrong. Shopify builds and migrations run from Hamburg for brands anywhere.

Do you only work with brands that are in Hamburg or in Germany?

No, and most clients are neither. The specialism is international brands entering the German market, so a typical client is North American or European with no German presence at all. Hamburg is where the work is done, not a description of who it is done for. Brands already based in Hamburg or the wider DACH region work with us where the project is a cross-border one.

Why does it matter whether the agency is physically in Germany?

Because a large part of a German launch consists of things that happen in Germany with German counterparties. VAT and OSS registration, LUCID packaging registration, a Responsible Person under GPSR, fulfilment and payment provider contracts, and the consumer law requirements that shape your checkout. Those run faster and with fewer surprises when the agency handling them is inside the market and operating in German, rather than coordinating it from outside.

Can we meet in person in Hamburg?

Yes. Clients visiting Hamburg are welcome at the office, and we travel for workshops and launch planning where it earns the trip. That said, most engagements run entirely remotely, and nothing in the process depends on being in the same room.

What does Hamburg tell you about German buyers that another city would not?

Hamburg is a commercial and trading city with an older, higher income consumer base than Berlin, and it reads brands differently. Price sensitivity, tolerance for premium positioning, and what counts as a credible brand story all shift between the two. Axelwin runs city level field research on exactly this, because a single national read on German buyers hides the differences that decide a launch.

Which services do you actually deliver from Hamburg?

German market entry and localisation, Shopify builds and migrations for the German market, conversion and UX work, marketplace launch on Amazon.de and Zalando, the legal and compliance layer, and peak season trading. Each has its own page with the detail. This page covers the firm and the location rather than repeating them.
